Sovereignty and irregular migration: the dynamics of irregular movement through Colombia and Ecuador

This paper aims to answer the following questions: (a) what discourses are created around irregular migration in Ecuador and Colombia? (b) what is the relationship between those discourses and migration policies and politics? These questions were contextualised and embedded in the case studies presented here, keeping in mind the rise in irregular migration through Latin America as a consequence of Ecuador’s 2008 Constitution, which enshrined the right to human mobility and which resulted in Ecuador’s open border policy.
