Enhanced refugee registration and human security in northern Ecuador

This study will examine the impact of access to legal rights on the human security of Colombian refugees in Sucumbíos province. Through interviews with key stakeholders, it was found that while registered refugees did experience some strengthened human security, their dependence on negative coping mechanisms did not decrease significantly. This paper will also discuss the impacts that registration has had on the various elements of human security, with particular attention to the impacts on women, children, indigenous and Afro-Colombian persons.
