Although the army has been given police powers and security forces have stepped up summary executions to eradicate crime, freedom of the press seems safe.
Hilaire Sobers, a journalist on the Jamaica Observer, received a threatening letter on 7 September 2001, after several times criticising in his weekly column the inaction of the authorities in relation to extra-judicial killings by the security forces. Sobers, who is also a lawyer and human rights campaigner, thinks the threats came from a supporter of the ruling People's National Party (PNP).
