The constitution provides for freedom of the press, and the government generally respects this right in practice. The Marshall Islands Gazette, a government monthly, carries official announcements and tends to avoid political coverage. In addition, journalists practice some self-censorship on sensitive political issues. The media consist of a private weekly newspaper, which prints articles in both English and Marshallese, and two radio stations: the state broadcaster and a station that offers religious broadcasting along with news from the BBC and other foreign services. In addition, a cable station carries entertainment, foreign news, and coverage of local events.
