A press law passed this year intensifies the state-run assault on the news media and inspires routine self-censorship for fear of life-threatening reprisals and imprisonment directed at journalists. No daily newspapers are published. With the exception of one weekly, other weeklies and monthlies are closely associated with the authorities. The government's advertising ban against opposition publications limits their viability. Privately-owned radio and television are forbidden by law. The Rwandan Journalists Association is ineffectual.
