March 31, 1999, in Ibadan, Nigeria
Fasasi, an active member of the National Association of Women Journalists and former treasurer of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), was shot dead by three unidentified gunmen in Ibadan. Despite widespread calls for a government inquiry, both the motive and the perpetrators remain unknown. On May 4, another journalist and NUJ official, Lanre Arogundade, was charged with Fasasi's murder. In August, the case against him was dropped for lack of evidence.
