La Prensa
July 15, 1997, in San Luis Río Colorado, Mexico

Flores González, editor and owner of the daily La Prensa in San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora State, in northern Mexico, was gunned down as he was arriving at the newspaper's offices. Flores González was known for his aggressive coverage of the drug trade, including a story published in May reporting that a half-ton of cocaine confiscated by federal authorities had disappeared from the Federal Judicial Police Headquarters in San Luis Río Colorado. In addition, his newspaper had recently reported on the special treatment being given to an imprisoned drug lord. Police arrested a gunman on July 18 allegedly hired by the drug lord's brother and charged him with the crime.
