De Mello, director of the privately owned newsletter Imparcial Fax, was gunned down by an unidentified assassin outside his home, in the capital, Luanda. De Mello was shot in the early morning hours on the stairs leading to his apartment. According to his wife, military officials had recently warned de Mello to stop writing about the war.
