  The General Assembly, Recalling its resolutions on the United Nations Educational and TrainingProgramme for Southern Africa, in particular resolution 36/53 of24 November 1981, Having considered the report of the Secretary-General, containing anaccount of the work of the Advisory Committee on the United NationsEducational and Training Programme for Southern Africa and the operation ofthe Programme for the period from 1 October 1981 to 30 September 1982, Recognizing the valuable assistance rendered by the Programme to thepeoples of South Africa and Namibia, Strongly convinced that the continuation and expansion of the Programmeis essential in order to meet the increasing demand for educational andtraining opportunities by the peoples of South Africa and Namibia, Fully recognizing the need to provide educational opportunities andcounselling to student refugees in a wide variety of professional, cultural,technical and linguistic disciplines, particularly in the areas of developmentand international co-operation, l. Endorses the report of the Secretary-General on the United NationsEducational and Training Programme for Southern Africa;

2. Commends the Secretary-General and the Advisory Committee on theUnited Nations Educational and Training Programme for Southern Africa fortheir continued efforts to promote generous contributions to the Programme;

3. Expresses its appreciation to all those who have supported theProgramme by providing contributions, scholarships or places in theireducational institutions;

4. Notes with concern that, owing to inflation and rising scholarshipcosts, contributions and pledges have declined, in real terms, in 1982 from the corresponding figure in 1981;

5. Appeals to all States, institutions, organizations and individualsto offer greater financial and other support to the Programme in order toensure its continuation and expansion.
