1705 (LIII). Assistance to southern Sudanese refugees returning from abroad

The Economic and Social Council, Having heard the statement of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees at the 1835th plenary meeting of the Council, Recalling its resolution 1655 (LII) of 1 June 1972, whereby, inter alia, it took cognizance of the need for assistance in the relief, rehabilitation and resettlement of Sudanese refugees and displaced persons in southern Sudan, Commending the positive response by some Governments, the organizations within the United Nations system and non-governmental organizations concerned, to the appeals launched by the Secretary-General and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees,

1. Urges Governments, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, specialized agencies and other international organizations associated with the United Nations and non-governmental organizations concerned, to provide the assistance required for the voluntary repatriation, rehabilitation and resettlement of the refugees returning from abroad, as well as of persons displaced within the country;

2. Requests that a progress report be submitted by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees on the assistance being extended by Governments, specialized agencies and other international organizations associated with the United Nations and non-governmental organizations concerned, for the relief, rehabilitation and resettlement of southern Sudanese refugees and displaced persons in southern Sudan, to the Economic and Social Council at its fifty-fourth session.
