A Turkish deputy prime minister says the Turkish cabinet headed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has decided to extend the state of emergency imposed on the country following the July failed coup attempt by three more months.
Speaking to reporters on October 2 after a cabinet meeting, Numan Kurtulmus said the state of emergency will be extended for another 90 days from October 19.
The state of emergency was introduced on July 20 – five days after the failed coup attempt that left at least 270 people dead.
Turkey accuses self-exiled cleric Fetullah Gulen of masterminding the failed coup attempt.
Gulen, who lives in the United States, denies any involvement with the attempted coup.
Some 32,000 people have been arrested in connection with the coup. Tens of thousands have been fired or suspended from their jobs.
