A man suspected of killing and dismembering his six children and pregnant wife in the Volga city of Nizhny Novgorod has been detained in central Russia, a regional Interior Ministry spokeswoman said.

Yelena Alekseyeva told Russian media on August 4 that the suspect, Oleg Belov, resisted arrest but was subdued by police in the town of Kovrov.

No police were injured, she said.

Kindergarten workers went to the police after "the children had stopped attending preschool since July 25," the Russian Prosecutor-General's Office said in a statement.

Nobody was answering the door at their apartment in Nizhny Novgorod, and the police were forced to enter through the window.

Inside, they "found dismembered remains of children," aged from 1 to 7 years old, the office said. The children's mother was also believed to have been killed.
