BISHKEK – Kyrgyzstan says it has detained a border guard for allegedly calling for jihad against the government.
State Border Guard Service spokeswoman Gulmira Borubaeva said on April 6 that the suspect, whose name and age were not disclosed, was being questioned.
He is suspected of posting a statement on Facebook on April 4 calling on young Kyrgyz men and women to join him in waging jihad, or holy war, against what the post called Kyrgyzstan's "infidel government."
The Border Guard Service said that six people, including four who grew up in orphanages, had joined the suspect.
Officials in mostly Muslim Kyrgyzstan and other Central Asian former Soviet republics say that hundreds of their citizens have traveled to Syria and Iraq to fight alongside militants from Islamic State and other extremist groups.
