Kyrgyzstan's human rights ombudsman says his sister, Urmat Amanbaeva, is under investigation in a probe he calls politically motivated.

Bakyt Amanbaev told reporters on November 4 that the case against his sister is connected to his activities as ombudsman. He did not elaborate.

The Kyrgyz prosecutor-general's office said on November 3 that Urmat Amanbaeva is suspected of organizing a criminal group involved in financial fraud and embezzlement when she was chief accountant at the Tuberculosis Center in the southern city of Osh in 2009-2013.

Amanbaeva was not available for immediate comment. Her associates say she is currently being treated at a private heart clinic in Osh.

Parliament chose Amanbaev as ombudsman last year after his predecessor was forced out following a scandal over the illegal release of a convicted crime boss from jail.
