A senior Afghan official has survived a suicide attack after his convoy was targeted in the country's north.

The suicide bomber ran into the motorcade carrying Balkh Province's deputy governor before detonating his explosives on November 17.

The deputy governor, Mohammad Zahir Wahdat, survived unhurt in his armored vehicle but two civilian bystanders were killed.

Several of Wahdat's personal bodyguards were wounded and taken to hospital.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack but similar incidents in the past have been blamed on the Taliban.

Meanwhile, Afghan police on November 17 found the bodies of six men hanged by the Taliban on the side of a road in the southern province of Zabul.

Police said they were civilian workers kidnapped last week in neighboring Kandahar Province.
