MINSK – The national Prosecutor-General's Office in Belarus has received another request from Bishkek for the extradition of former Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiev, who fled into exile nearly three years ago.
The prosecutor-general's spokesman said on March 1 the request will be considered within a month.
Last month, Bishkek's garrison court sentenced Bakiev to 24 years in jail and his brother, Janysh Bakiev, to life in prison.
The Bakievs were tried in absentia for their alleged roles in a 2009 political assassination.
The verdict took effect on February 22, prompting the Kyrgyz prosecutor-general's office to once again demand their extradition.
Minsk has said in the past it considers the case politically motivated.
President Bakiev fled Kyrgyzstan in April 2010 following shootings amid mounting antigovernment demonstrations in Bishkek.
Bakiev has been living in Belarus since his ouster.
His brother has also been seen in Belarus in the last year.
