An Afghan official has told RFE/RL on condition of anonymity that Afghanistan's next presidential election will be held on April 5, 2014.
An official announcement on the election date is expected on October 31.
The next presidential election in Afghanistan is seen as crucial to the country's stability after the withdrawal of NATO troops at the end of 2014.
President Hamid Karzai, who is serving his second term, is constitutionally barred from running again.
He has been under pressure from opposition groups to set the election date.
Karzai has been the only elected head of state in Afghanistan since a 2001 US-led invasion brought down the hard-line Islamist Taliban regime.
