Kyrgyz President Almazbek AtambaevKyrgyz President Almazbek Atambaev

In a television interview, Kyrgyzstan's President Almazbek Atambaev has said that he will not attempt to remain in office after his current term expires in 2017.

Atambaev said he would adhere to the conditions of the country's new constitution, which allows a president to serve only one six-year term.

"I don't want to go down the same path as [former Kyrgyz Presidents] Askar Akaev and Kurmanbek Bakiev," Atambaev said.

Both Akaev and Bakiev were ousted from power by mass protests.

Atambaev said he would dedicate his remaining five years in office to "doing everything [needed] to get Kyrgyzstan on the tracks of stability, development, honesty, and fairness."
