A police officer seriously injured in a car explosion in Russia's restive Daghestan region has died in the hospital.

According to the republic's investigative department, "an unidentified criminal set off an explosive device planted on the bottom of a Nissan car driven by Ibragim Mamayev" in the city of Buinaksk early in the morning on August 14.

Captain Mamayev was the head of a local detention center in Buinaksk.

Violence between suspected Islamic militants and security forces in Russia's North Caucasus region leaves scores of people dead and injured each year.

The most volatile republics in the region are Daghestan, Chechnya, Ingushetia, and Kabardino-Balkaria.
