Independent online media outlets have been blocked in Tajikistan as situation in the restive Gorno-Badakhshan region in the country's east remains unclear.

Tajikistan's Internet provider, Telecom Technology, says the website of Russia's RIA Novosti news agency and that of Tajikistan's Asia-Plus news agency have been blocked.

Earlier Tajik officials blocked the Russian news portals vesti.ru, fergana.ru., lenta.ru, and centrasia.ru, as well as the BBC's website in Russian.

Meanwhile, state-controlled media report that the situation in Gorno-Badakhshan has stabilized after clashes in the region between security forces and armed local rebels left at least 67 people dead last week.

Fighting started when the government launched an operation in the region following the assassination of a high-level security official there on July 21.

Based on reporting by ITAR-TASS and Interfax
