BISHKEK – The Kyrgyz Central Election Commission (BSK) has registered four more presidential candidates for the October 30 election, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.
BSK officials announced on October 6 that Torobai Kolubaev, Tursunbai Bakir Uulu, Nariman Tyuleev, and Akbaraly Aitikeev have been registered as independent candidates after rechecking their application documents to confirm that they have the support of the needed minimum of 30,000 voters, verified with valid signatures.
The BSK declined last month to register the four as presidential candidates on the grounds that they did not have enough supporters. The would-be candidates appealed that ruling in court, forcing the BSK to double check their applications.
BSK officials also said on October 6 that four others who applied to be candidates – Toktaiym Umetalieva, Kalybek Arabaev, Sooronbai Dyikanov, and Ulanbek Soodanbek – will not be registered as candidates. All four had appealed an earlier decision rejecting their candidacies.
The BSK decision raises the number of registered candidates to 24. One of them, Marat Sultanov, had announced earlier this week that he plans to withdraw his candidacy, though he has not officially done so.
