The government of Turkmenistan has lashed out at Russian media coverage of a large explosion this week that rocked a town outside the capital, Ashgabat.
The Turkmen Foreign Ministry said in a statement on July 10 that television reports about the mass scale of deaths and destruction are misleading and inaccurate.
Turkmen authorities insist the blast in the town of Abadan was caused by overheating at a fireworks warehouse and that nobody was killed.
That is despite accounts to many media by witnesses suggesting the incident was the result of high explosives detonating.
