The Socialist Chronicle is not mentioned in the Europa World Year Book for 2002, 2001 and 1997. However, the year book lists The Herald as a weekly English newspaper based in Yaoundé, with a circulation of 8,000 copies (1997, 772; Europa 2000 2000, 885; Europa 2001 2001, 922). World Information identifies the Socialist Chronicle as a weekly publication but it does not provide details about its location or circulation nor does it mention The Herald (World Information 22 Apr. 2003).
"World information.com is the electronic publishing arm of World of Information, a UK-based business information company with 25 years experience of international publishing. In print, on-line or via the internet, the group provides an essential reference source for business people, governments, international organisations and academics" (ibid. 25 Apr. 2003).
According to Country Reports 1997, between 40 and 50 private newspapers are "published sporadically" (40); however, only 15 were published on "a regular basis during the year. These newspapers are often outspoken in their criticism of the President, the Government, corruption, and economic policies" (40).
Additionally, "because of the high cost of a newspaper to an average citizen, as well as distribution problems, newspapers are not read widely outside the major cities" (Country Reports 1997 1998, 40).
