Reports of student riots in Lagos between April and June 2000 could not be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.
However, Agence France Presse (AFP) reported on 21 June 2000 that violent student protests against power shortages in the city of Warri, Delta State, resulted in dozens of injuries and the death of three students. According to the Vanguard, Delta State University (DSU) student's union leader Mike Akpojure threatened to continue the protests if the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) failed to provide a consistent source of power during the student's examination period (Vanguard 23 June 2000).
Although additional information on the student protests during June 2000 could not be found, a 14 September 2000 report by the BBC on the brief hostage taking of DSU Vice-Chancellor Ovietobore Igun by students explained that tensions in the university remained high since June when student protests against the power outages on campus resulted in violence.
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
