References to an organization or group called "Ninos de la Calle" or "Niños de la Calle" in the state of Merida, or of misappropriation of funds related to street children in that state during the period 1999-2002, could not be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.

The 2001-2002 annual report of the Venezuelan non-governmental human rights organization PROVEA provides some general information on the situation of "inhabitants of the streets" (pobladores de la calle), including children, throughout Venezuela (PROVEA 2002). It mentions Merida as one of the states in which the federal institution Conavi carried out projects during 2001, which had been budgeted for in 1999 and 2000 (ibid.). These projects were reportedly aimed at providing lodging and daytime shelter to minors and elders, and were carried out with state and municipal contributions (ibid.).

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
