No recent (2002-2003) references to the Popular Liberation Forces (Fuerzas Populares de Liberación, FPL) as an individual organization could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.

Recent reports mention the FPL only in a reference to an FMLN leading figure's former affiliation with the group and to identify it as a faction within the FMLN. For example, Facundo Guardado is described as a former commander of the FPL and former FMLN presidential candidate, who separated from the FMLN two years after his candidacy, in 2001, and who now leads the Renewal Movement Party (Partido Movimento Renovador, PMR) party (Probidad 10 Jan. 2003). The most recent reference states that the FMLN harbours at least two "orthodox" factions: one identified with a former Communist Party (Partido Comunista, PC) member of the FMLN and followers of FMLN figure Shafick Handal, the other faction identified with the FPL and followers of FMLN figure Sanchez Ceren (El Faro 27 Jan. 2003). The latter report also mentions that the "orthodox-PC" FMLN mayoral candidate for Soyapango undermined the candidacy of the "FPL" potential candidate, Marta Rodriguez (ibid.).

For additional information on the dissolution of individual groups within the FMLN, including the FPL, please refer to SLV36446.E of 15 February 2001.
