While no information on travel by bus from Madhu church (Mannar) to Colombo in August 2001 could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate, the following information may be of interest.

A late March 2001 article reported that the night bus service between Mannar and Colombo had been restarted on 30 March 2001 following 20 years of non-service due to the "war situation" (Daily News 31 Mar. 2001). The service, which was to run via Vavuniya, Medawachchiya, Anuradhapura, and Puttalam, was to depart Mannar for Colombo daily at 4 p.m. (ibid.). The Colombo-Mannar bus was scheduled to depart from the Pettah Central Bus Stand on a daily basis at midnight (ibid.). Although stating that there were plans to streamline them in the future, the Sri Lankan Transport Minister was reported to have stated that bus services in the north were currently being run without "proper time tables" (ibid.).

No reference to checkpoints or to the average time of travel along this route could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
