The information that follows was provided by a consular officer at the embassy of Colombia in Ottawa during a 12 March 2003 telephone interview.
All Colombian males between the ages of 18 and 50 are required to carry with them their national citizenship card (cédula de ciudadanía) and their military service card (libreta de servicio militar). The military service card would show whether the person has completed his military service and/or whether he is considered part of the military reserve. The requirements associated with the country's compulsory military service do not apply to minors, women, or men 50 years of age or older. Therefore, women, males under 18 years of age and men who have reached 50 years of age are not required to carry a military service card.
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
