According to the Consular section of the Embassy of France in Ottawa, on 31 December 1975, the Comoros were divided in two parts: Mayotte Island remained a part of France and the Islands of the Grande Comore, Anjouan and Moheli became an independent state called the Islamic Federal Republic of the Comoros (31 Aug. 2000).

According to a document of the French Department of Justice, a person is French if one of his/her parents was born in the Comoros before the independence of Comoros (n.d).

In an interview on 6 October 2000, the consul of the Embassy of Comoros in Paris stated that according to the Comorian citizenship code, a person born in 1959 whose parents are Comorian citizens has an automatic right to Comorian citizenship.
