The information contained in this Response was provided by the Assistant Manager of the Refugee Project at the Iraq Foundation in Washington, DC, during a telephone interview with the Research Directorate (28 Aug. 2001).
The Assistant Manager stated that the Delem are a tribe concentrated in Baghdad, Ramadi and Mousel. He said that the Delem were involved with the government in 1995 and some of its members were imprisoned for plotting to overthrow the government (1995).
He also said that currently, the Delem are divided between those who "work with" the government and are involved in the army and the government and are others who are not (ibid.). He stated that treatment of the latter group depends on whether they are involved in politics or other activities that the authorities consider anti-government (ibid.).
