In a 16 July 2001 telephone interview, the executive secretary of the National Ecuadorian Federation of Campesino (Peasant), Indigenous, and Black Organizations (Federación Nacional de Organizaciones Campesinas, Indígenas y Negras del Ecuador, FENOCIN) in Quito stated that the federation does not have provincial counterparts, but has hundreds of groups working for the organization at the local level, including in the province of Cotopaxi. There is no secretary general of FENOCIN, but a president who is currently Pedro de la Cruz; the vice-president is Pedro Kuimbanba. Two other sources also report that Pedro de la Cruz is the president of FENOCIN (Andean Commission of Jurists Apr. 2001; BBC 5 Feb. 2001).
Two sources provide additional information as to the leaders of other peasant and indigenous organizations in Cotopaxi. Weekly News Update on the Americas reported on 31 January 2001 that Cesar Umajinga was the president of the Cotopaxi Indigenous and Campesino Movement. IPS reported on 26 January 2001 that Abelardo Tucumb was the president of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE) in Cotopaxi.
