On 3 April 2000 an official at the Embassy of the Republic of Yemen in Ottawa stated that a person who was born in Aden before South Yemen became independent would have been entitled to South Yemeni citizenship when South Yemen became independent, even if he or she was not living in South Yemen at the time, if his or her parents were Yemeni (i.e. belonged to the indigenous population of South Yemen during the colonial period). The official added that under Yemeni law today, only Yemeni citizens can have Yemeni passports.
