Information on the Communist Party in the United Arab Emirates was not found among the sources currently available to the IRBDC. The Register of Communist Parties in the Yearbook of International Communist Affairs (1984 and 1989 editions) does not have an entry for the United Arab Emirates, nor did other sources such as Political Parties of the World, or Revolutionary and Dissident Movements.
The United Arab Emirates is a federal union of seven Sheikhdoms whose rulers constitute a Supreme Council. [ Alan Day and H. Degenhardt, eds. Political Parties of the World, (Detroit: Gale Research Company, 1984), p. 464.] Legislative power is held by a 40-member consultative Federal National Council and no political parties are allowed. [ Ibid.] One source (attached) discusses support for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Oman and the Arab Gulf (PFLOAG) and the pan-Arab Ba'athist Party. [ George E. Delury, ed., World Encyclopedia of Political Systems & Parties, (New York: Facts on File Publications, 1983), p. 1081.] In January 1976, demonstrations protesting the lack of water and electricity rights broke out in northern Ra's al-Khaimah. [ Ibid.] Although the report states that "Similar sorts of nationalist and socialist activity have been evident in other rural areas of the UAE's poorer member states", it does not elaborate on these activities, nor does it mention the organization of a Communist Party.
