In a telephone interview, the director of the Centro de Documentación de Honduras, a non-governmental organization based in Tegucigalpa that specializes in studies on Honduras, told the DIRB that he could not find any information pertaining to the death of an individual named Cesar Castellanos, union president of Mejores Alimentos de Honduras, in the archives of the centre nor in the Honduran newspapers of the above-mentioned period (24 March 1995).

According to the director, union leaders are no longer the targets of political persecution in Honduras such as they were during the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s (ibid.).

According to a secretary at the company previoulsy named Mejores Alimentos de Honduras, this company was sold one year ago and renamed Alimentos Excel. The secretary could not provide information on the details of the sale nor on the union's staff and could not refer the DIRB to another representative knowledgeable on these topics (24 Mar. 1995).

For a general view of trade unions in Honduras, please consult the attached document.

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
