Current information that would update previous Responses to Information Requests on the Galgalo could not be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate. A 1 December 1997 AFP report includes the Galgalo within the Hawiye family of clans which also includes the Abgal, Habr Gedir and the Murosade. The same report describes the Galgalo as "untouchables," but provides no additional details to explain this designation.
According to Africa Confidential, the main factions in Mogadishu and their leaders are: Hussein Aydeed (Jalaf/Saad/Habr Gedir), Osman Atto (Hilowle/Saad/Habr Gedir) and Ali Mahdi (Harti/Abgal) (17 Apr. 1998).
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
