Various reports indicate general elections took place on 14 May 1989. Virtually all available reports of events around that date deal with the election campaign, polls and candidate profiles.

A thorough search through the sources currently available to the IRBDC found news articles of the requested month dealing with violence concentrated on a series of riots and looting which took place in Argentina after the President announced new economic measures, late in the month of May. Bombs were reportedly found in front of financial establishments and the headquarters of the then-ruling UCR and the Communist Party during a State of Siege declared on 29 May 1989, indicating nobody claimed responsibility for the incidents. [ "Alfonsín asks nation to make sacrifices", Inter Press Service, 31 May 1989, p. 2.] One report [ "Looting intensifies in Argentina; nine dead so far", Reuters, 30 May 1989.] states that four bombs and two smoke canisters exploded in central Buenos Aires on tuesday 30 May 1989, injuring four passers-by and a policeman. Another report stated that, amid the looting taking place in seven cities, homemade gasoline bombs were seized. [ "State of siege follows looting in Argentina; suspends rights", The Associated Press, 29 May 1989.] In Mendoza, a supermarket was reportedly set on fire with a gasoline bomb.
