The following information was provided during a 14 December 1998 telephone interview with a former journalist in Iran who is currently Chargé de cours at the Université de Paris II. The former journalist specializes in the media in Iran.
The former journalist stated that the Iranian Society of Film Critics and Writers defines itself as a syndicate rather than a society. There has been tensions between the group and the conservative elements of the government since its creation, mainly because of the secular leanings of its membership. This information was corroborated during a 15 December 1998 telephone interview with a professor in the Department of History at George Mason University in Fairfax who specializes in Iranian media and literature. Neither sources could provide additional information on this organization.
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
