According to an article from Central America Update, Gustavo Herrera Gonzalez, a 23-year-old law student at the University of San Carlos, in Guatemala City, was reported to have been kidnapped and killed by armed men as he was collecting contributions for the "Good Friday" celebrations (13 Apr. 1990). The murder was reported to have taken place between March 26 and March 28 1990 (ibid.).

According to the director of the Center for Human Legal Rights based in Guatemala City and Washington DC, the "Good Friday" (Huelga de Dolores) is a satirical feast organized mainly by the students of the University of San Carlos, to protest against the government and the army and their alleged involvements in human rights violations. In a telephone interview, the director stated that this Good Friday celebration is held once a year, the week before Holy Week (25 Jan. 1995).

Although the source could not provide any information on Gustavo Herrera Gonzalez's case, he did mention that some student murders occurred during the 1990 and 1991 "Good Friday" celebrations (ibid.). For information on Gustavo Herrera Gonzalez's abduction as well as on Guatemala's political parties, including the Union de Centro Nacional, please consult the attached documents.

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
