There are no reports of a September 1997 massacre of Daza (Gorane) tribe by the Chadian régime or of student protests and arrests in the sources consulted by the Research Directorate. The president of the MDD-FAO, the Movement for Development and Democracy- Western Armed Forces, an armed opposition party in Chad, stated during a 2 June 1998 telephone interview that he is not aware of a September 1997 massacre of members of Daza (Gorane) tribe by the Chadian régime. He also indicated that both he and Hussein Habré, the president of another MDD faction, the MDD-FANT- the Movement for Development and Democracy-National Armed Forces of Chad and former president of Chad, are members of the Daza (Gorane) tribe, which is located in the northwest part of Chad.
