According to the attachment from India: A Travel Survival Kit, Gawahati (Gauhati) is the capital of the state of Assam and Cuttack is the former capital of the state of Orissa (Crowther 1990, 394, 605). The attachment provides brief information on both cities. A map of Gawahati can also be found on page 395.
Current information on toll payment and border checks of trucks could not be found among the sources consulted by the DIRB. However, the following information from 1992 and 1993 may be of interest.
According to Keesing's, on 7 July 1992, following talks with the ministry of transportation, truck drivers decided to end a week-long strike (July 1992, 39008). The strike had been called in protest over local taxes to be imposed in seven states (ibid.).
On 6 August 1993, approximately 1,800,000 truck drivers ended a six-day protest strike that had been called because the government had not removed the local taxes as it had promised to do following the July 1992 strike (ibid. Aug. 1993, 39601). Following the second strike, the government agreed to abolish road and inter-state taxes in the states of Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh (ibid.).
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
