According to a professor of African politics at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, the timber industry is one of the leading export industries in Ghana (19 Jan. 1994). As a leading foreign exchange earner, its management, whether by state or privately-run organizations, would have been of interest to the activists of the Committees for the Defence of the Revolution (CDRs) (ibid.). However, the source could not link CDR activists specifically to the Atwima Timber Camp.
For basic information on the CDRs, in particular their origins, mandate and activities, please refer to the November 1990 IRBDC Questions and Answer Series paper entitled What Are the Committees for the Defence of the Revolution (CDRs) and the Civil Defence Organization (CDOs) in Ghana. The IRB has already compiled much information on the CDRs and these documents are currently available on the REFINFO database of your Regional Documentation Centre.
This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
