West Africa reports growing conflict between Ghana's university students and the government over its student loan scheme (24-30 Apr. 1989, 635). The first confrontation the students at the University of Science and Technology (UST) in Kumasi and the government took place at an organized symposium on 9 March 1989 (Ibid.). The source did not mention the number of casualties, if any, arising from this confrontation.

According to this source, the government considers the loan scheme to be the best solution to the problems of higher education in Ghana. University students are expected to pay for their board and lodging from these loans (Ibid.). The students, on the other hand, view the loan scheme as "obnoxious, not serving any good purpose and the first step towards privatizing tertiary education" (Ibid.). The source did not mention any student protests taking place at Kumasi High School. Additional and/or corroborative information on the requested subject could not be found among the sources currently available to the DIRB in Ottawa.
