In addition to the information provided in Responses to Information Requests URY11162 of 31 July 1992 and URY11193 of 9 July 1992, please find attached a recent article that refers to the Movimiento de Liberación Nacional-Tupamaros (MLN-Tupamaros) (Latin American Regional Reports 10 Sept. 1992, 6). The article reports on a disagreement within the Frente Amplio (FA) coalition over allegations of corruption involving FA officials of the municipal government of Montevideo. The Tupamaros, part of the Frente Amplio, reportedly insist on an investigation of the corruption allegations (Ibid.). Despite the controversy, no actual split in the coalition had been reported by December 1992 among the available sources. The attached article mentions Eleuterio Fern ndez Huidobro as a leader or speaker of the Tupamaros. He is also named as a leader of the group in the attached section of the book Communist and Marxist Parties of the World.
Various reports indicate that the Frente Amplio coalition, together with dissident groups of the Partido Nacional and one of four factions of the opposition Partido Colorado, has supported the referendum on the current privatization of public interests law. The referendum, meant to approve or reject the law, is scheduled to be held on 13 December 1992. The available reports, however, do not specifically mention the Tupamaros.
Additional and/or corroborating information on the requested subject could not be found among the sources currently available to the DIRB.
