During a 3 May 1996 telephone interview a representative of the Embassy of Ethiopia in Washington, DC stated that an Ethiopian citizen can not lose his or his citizenship upon becoming a permanent resident of another country. An Ethiopian citizen can lose his or her citizenship only if he or she acquires another citizenship. The same source added that in this situation the individual has the right to choose which citizenship he or she prefers to keep.
Article 33 of the constitution of Ethiopia states that "no Ethiopian citizen shall be deprived of his or her Ethiopian citizenship" (Blaustein 1995, 18). Please find attached the section of the Ethiopian constitution that deals with citizenship.
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
