For recent information on the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), please refer to the DIRB document entitled Current Information on the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO). This document, which is available at all Regional Documentation Centres, contains various articles which chronicle the activities of NADECO from 18 December 1995 to 10 March 1996, including demonstrations the coalition has been involved in, as well as the names of leaders and members who were detained or arrested during that period.
Response to Information Request NGA23687.E of 23 April 1996 also lists documents which refer to NADECO members arrested or detained in 1995. Africa Research Bulletin states that Alfred Rowane, NADECO founder, was murdered in his home in Lagos and notes that Anthony Enahoro, "independence hero, now NADECO chieftain, recently fled for his life into exile in Canada" (22 July 1996, 12310). According to Africa News, NADECO is one of ten Nigerian pro-democracy organisations resolved to work together under a common platform, the United Democratic Front of Nigeria (UDFN), to restore democracy in Nigeria ( Apr. 1996). Please see the attached Africa News article for the text of the UDFN common declaration.
Information on the structural organisation of NADECO and on where it was founded could not be found among the source consulted by the DIRB.
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
