Attached are a number of documents which provide information on the Frente Amplio, a coalition of political groups which participated in the last general elections and is a major component of the present government's opposition. As reported in two of the attached publications, the Frente Amplio coalition recently split as the main political groups from which the coalition was formed withdrew their support, apparently in preparation for contesting the forthcoming presidential elections, scheduled for November of this year, separately. [Latin American Daily Report, (Washington: Foreign Broadcast Information Service), 18 December 1988 and 15 March 1989; Latin American Weekly Report, (London:Latin American Newsletters), 23 March 1989, pp. 6-7.] The Frente Amplio reportedly has a network of local groups called "Nucleos Frenteamplistas" (Broadfront Nuclei), whose leader was, in 1986, Danilo Astori. [ Latin American Political Movements, (London: Longman Publishing Group, 1986), p. 248.]
