Please find attached some recent articles that refer to the Republican Unity Party (Partido Unidad Republicana, PUR).

The book Political Handbook of the World: 1992 apparently misspells the Spanish name of the party as Partido Unidad Democrática, or PUD (Banks 1992, 222). The source states that the party is a splinter of the Social Christian Party (Partido Social Cristiano, PSC) that registered in October 1991 "as a 1992 campaign vehicle for Sixto Dur n Ballén, who had run as a PSC candidate in 1978 and 1988" (Ibid.).

An attached September 1992 report states that the PUR faced a series of internal problems since it was formed in 1991 and in late-1992 changed its leadership (El Universo 27 Sept. 1992). Please consult the attached article for further details.

The PUR reportedly holds only 13 seats in the 77-seat Congress (Latin American Newsletters 8 Oct. 1992, 7). The party is or has been allied with the Ecuadorean Conservative Party (Partido Conservador Ecuatoriano, PCE). Together these parties hold less than a third of the single-chamber legislature's seats (Ibid. 17 Dec. 1992, 3). The PSC reportedly provided support to the PUR government in blocking a possible censure vote against two ministers (Ibid.).

Please refer to the attached documents for additional recent information on the PUR.
