An official at the Embassy of the Republic of Yemen in Ottawa stated during a 25 March 1996 telephone interview that a person is not required to reliquish his/her citizenship of origin upon receiving Yemen citizenship. In order to become a citizen of Yemen, a person must be a Muslim and must have resided in Yemen for at least ten years. The attached subsequent 26 March 1996 facsimile sent to the DIRB by the Embassy of the Republic of Yemen indicates that Law No. 6 of 1990 regarding the acquisition of Yemeni Citizenship does not state that a person has to reliquish his/her citizenship of origin in order to become a citizen of the Republic of Yemen.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
