Lalith Athulathmudali is one of the two Cabinet ministers who resigned his position after an abortive attempt by United National Party members and opposition members to impeach President Premadasa on grounds ranging from attempted murder to corruption (Inter Press, 8 Oct. 1991; Inter Press, 5 Sept. 1991). He is also one of eight dissidents of the United National Party who were expelled for violating party discipline and later lost their parliamentary seats (BBC, 7 Dec. 1991). Mr. Athulathmudali has since become a leader of the newly-formed Democratic United National Front (DUNF) and is launching a petition protest to force the President to call new elections or to resign (Reuters, 16 July 1992).

The IRBDC in Ottawa has no further information on this subject at the present time.
