According to a 13 June 1996 El Mercurio report, Catholic University of Valparaíso students participated in a nationwide student protest against national restructuring and modernization proposals (ibid.). La Epoca also reported the event but did not note that students from the Catholic University of Valparaíso had participated (13 June 1996). Both reports state that the march turned violent as students began to throw rocks and Molotov cocktails at the police (ibid.; El Mercurio 13 June 1996). The police dispersed the students with tear-gas (ibid.) and arrested 33 student demonstrators (La Epoca 13 June 1996). The sources do not indicate whether students from the Catholic University of Valparaíso were among those students arrested (El Mercurio 13 June 1996; La Epoca 13 June 1996). Please consult the attachment for further information.
In a 6 February 1997 telephone interview with a Catholic University of Valparaíso official specific information on the Student Federation of the Catholic University of Valparaíso and the treatment of its members by the authorities could not be obtained by the DIRB because the university is currently recessed.
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
